PROMOTE YOUR COMPANY • Citations are references to your website, including your physical address� • Google uses external citations as verification of your status in local SEO. • External websites such as Yelp or Citysearch are valuable for SEO� DESCRIPTION: How does Google know where your business is, and how does it know that this information it has is reliable? If someone searches Google for “San Francisco CPA Firms,” how does Google know which businesses are truly in San Francisco, active, and worthy of being on page one of the search results in the coveted “local listings” section? One factor in this answer is the presence of citations� Citations are references on external websites that verify your physical location, especially your address� Make it easy for Google to understand your citations by claiming your local listings and making them consistent in the way that they display your address, city, state, and telephone number� Finally, encourage reviews across local sites to further improve the citation effect� BEST FOR: Local businesses� DO THIS: One time� TIME TO COMPLETE: More than a few hours� HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS IS TO YOUR BUSINESS? Once you find your listing, you will be prompted to claim it via telephone or postcard verification. PROMOTE YOUR COMPANY • Inbound links matter tremendously to Google and SEO • Links can be hard to get, as few people link outward� • Link bait means novel ideas such as infographics, widgets, etc� DESCRIPTION: Links matter a great deal to Google, as Google interprets links as “votes” on the Web� If website A has 50 inbound links from other websites, and website B has only 25, then, all other things being equal, website A will outrank website B on Google searches� Like votes in an election, inbound links propel websites to the winning positions� Moreover, the structure of links (keyword-heavy targets in the A HREF tag) and the authority of the linking websites factor into the Google algorithm� One part of an effective link-building strategy is to brainstorm link bait� Link bait refers to useful widgets such as BMI calculators, the real-time price of gold, or even infographics, that other people find so compelling they blog about it, tweet it, and otherwise link back from their website to your website (where the bait resides)� So if you can create a “link bait” idea, you get an amazing SEO benefit: a link-building campaign on autopilot, for free BEST FOR: All organizations� DO THIS: As often as possible� TIME TO COMPLETE: More than a few hours� HOW IMPORTANT IS THIS IS TO YOUR BUSINESS?
