Marketing on Twitter
Many people just look at Twitter as a giant hangout. That was my first impression too. I called it a giant cocktail party. People came and left as they pleased.
They contributed their thoughts, shared what they were up to and were gone. It made the interactions light and breezy and because I was witty and could pack a lot into 140 characters, I built a steady following.
When I thought that way, I never imagined that Twitter could be a fantastic platform to market products, services, and information. Think of how a billboard would look at a cocktail party. Or people holding up attention catching signs that promoted something. These activities would look and feel absolutely out of place in that venue.
But when you think about it, marketing happens all the time at such social events. I’ll share how much I enjoyed a blog I just finished reading. People will discuss a particularly enthralling television program.
Someone will invariably ask about clothes or shoes or some other product another partygoer is wearing or using. And in those moments, organic marketing is taking place.
What showed me different was joining a blog network. Of course, when I started tweeting, I was blogging on my own. My regular interactions on Twitter were with other bloggers as well as friends who knew about my hobby. When I joined the network, they helped illuminate the purpose of tweeting.
The network had a good grasp of why Twitter made so much sense for the writers. Regular tweeting made your blog content more interesting for readers. In turn, their interest led to more organic page views. More page views meant more revenue from advertisers and paid for the infrastructure of running a blog network.

I had seen other writers in the network openly tweeting links to their blog posts. And so I figured, why not give it a try and see what happens. So after going out, bantering some with my followers and some of the people I followed, I posted a tweet saying basically, “Hey give a look at what I wrote on my blog.” I included a link and bantered some more.
That day I surpassed 100 unique page views for the first time. Those followers were ready to read more of what I had written. I just hadn’t asked them to do so. The first lesson I want to teach you about Twitter marketing is willing to ask for your followers’ attention. If you don’t ask something, you will not get it.
The best way to ask for their attention is to do what I had inadvertently done. I made clear my intent in using Twitter was to meet new people and socialize. Not plug my blog posts.
Sure I had my blog linked in the profile. I’d mention pieces I was working on, but I rarely tweeted out links to my own writing. I thought it was a little brazen to just share a link to my own stuff.
But after I established a good rapport with a number of my followers, I had established that I wasn’t just there to sell them something. I was, in fact, a valued member of a micro-community.
And as long as I was actively contributing to the conversation and kept my blog related tweets to just new pieces I published, I saw steady inbound blog traffic from Twitter.
What I did immediately was link my blog’s article feed to my Twitter account and so every time I posted a new article, it would generate a tweet that my followers would see. That way I didn’t even need to ask. Technology would ask them for me and I could stay the witty charming guy they all followed anyway.
I had become a Twitter marketer! And I still didn’t know much of what I was doing. But what I did realize was that if I could pull fifteen percent of my followers onto my blog at least once a day by tweeting my articles to them, and I wanted more blog readers, then I needed to up my follower count and I needed to get it to jump in a hurry.
Attract More Followers
Followers of equal influence. It’s true for political parties, actors, athletes, and businesses. Popularity in the marketplace matters for tweeters, too. Developing a strong following of fellow tweeters distributes your message to a bigger audience.
Beyond just eyeballs on your tweets and links, a bigger audience will also be filled with followers who are eager to spread your brand to other people. So our goal, simply put is to get more people to follow our Twitter feed.
Let me start with the obvious, we want to do this organically. You can buy followers. It might be cool to log in and see several thousand followers. Those non-organic followers might even convince a lot of real people to follow you. But it diminishes the reach and effectiveness of your followers.
Those real followers are what help your brand grow faster and faster. And that’s why they are more valuable to attract than the collection of bots that you can pay to follow you.
The easiest way to get more followers is to make it easy for other people to follow you. Making your Twitter account private and sharing your tweets inside a small circle of people who you approve will diminish your effectiveness as a Twitter marketer.
After that you’ll need to follow the plan I will lay out to grow your following quickly and effectively. You don’t need to follow it to a tee. Some of the things I suggest will work better for some people than others. You have to map out a plan that suits the brand you want to build.
Let me give you a quick example. It is universally agreed that sex sells. If you’re looking to build an edgy brand that appeals to men 18 to 35, then sex appeal will be a great means of gathering followers.

As your followers retweet and respond with your hashtag, they will help it to trend higher. As you continue to tweet out with this hashtag, more followers will see you and associate you with this trending topic.
These tags will also help your tweets show up in searches. So for the avid archer, playing up archery with a hashtag that references the sport’s appearance in popular culture is a clever and smart way to draw in fans of that cultural phenomenon to your interest.
Try something unique to intrigue followers. Inspirational quotes are a favorite of many people who are just starting out. And while they will draw interest, putting a creative take on the inspirational quote will draw a bigger one.
Everybody knows that whatever doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger. Many people smile at whatever doesn’t kill us only makes us stranger. Your own take on that kind of sentiment will help elevate you in the minds of followers.
Finally, you will need to practice good Twitiquette. Follow people who follow you. Good manners on Twitter means following the people who show an interest in you. Engage them in conversation.
Tweet at them about things that are of interest to you both. The people who follow them will see your dialogue and jump into the conversation, just like at a cocktail party.
Likewise, follow people with similar interests and then comb through their followers to find other people who enjoy the same things. Interacting with them will get you noticed.

It’s The Content
So how do you make sure you’re sending the best tweets out to the well-known tweeters of the world? That gets back to content, which remains king. They say that half the success in direct marketing is the list you use.
But Twitter isn’t direct marketing at all. It’s indirect marketing. Think billboard instead of junk mail. If a billboard is going to get your attention, what does it need to do?
I’ll give you a hint. I mentioned it in the last section. That’s right. First, be interesting. Second, don’t be boring. Third, always obey those two rules.
Twitter is a medium that rewards insights that a succinct, clever and a little caustic. As you succeed at sticking within those parameters, your base of followers will steadily grow.
Many of my best tweets began at 250 characters and then I sharpened the writing. Trimming unneeded words, rephrasing and refining the idea. That effort in a single tweet often paid off with more than a few retweets. And those retweets always resulted in followers.
Conversely, if I followed someone who often used twitlonger all the time, I stopped following pretty quickly. If their hook in the first 130 or so characters caught me, I’d want to see the rest of what they said, but that meant clicking, going outside of either my Twitter feed or my Twitter client.
I was happy to do that for a well-teased article. Less so for another 25 or 30 characters. They may have had the best content, but the extra effort diminished the usefulness of the information they shared.
The second element of content is a utility. Useful information tends to get passed around. The best way to grow your followers with content is by creating your own. Let’s go back to my example.
The article I first shared on Twitter wasn’t all that great. But it was useful and because I had a good group of initial followers who appreciated my Twitter style, it got good circulation and not only upped my blog’s page views but also my follower count.
The next means of offering valuable content is live-tweeting an event. In the pre-Twitter era, such events were enjoyed communally in public houses where people would gather and listen to each other’s take on the event itself.

The dialogue branches into several threads involving more and more people. It may turn contentious. It may remain jovial. Regardless, people are reading and following and my influence is growing.
Finally, content is bolstered by sharing interesting links. Some of these can be your own material. At the moment, though I am more focused on the material others have written. Like the producers of evening news broadcasts and news magazines, you can pick and choose what stories interest you enough to share with other people.
Based on your Twitter persona, your followers already trust your ability to curate information. These stories will engage them, especially when you solicit their feedback. Share a link with a question and watch as people respond and reply and spread the word of your ability to pick out interesting stories to their followers.
So to master content, no matter what you share do your best to make sure it is interesting and not boring. The rest will literally take care of itself. Now you have a large group of followers and some influence in certain realms. It’s time to get those followers to respond to your marketing efforts.
Drive Followers to Your Sites
Not much selling is done directly on Twitter. Given the restrictions on the messages sent out, Twitter has become a far more effective marketing tool than selling the tool.
That means you need to have content or places to send the followers that will convert into dollars for you. We’ll talk about straight up advertising in the next blog. For now, we’re going to stick with the basics of linking to products, services or entertainments from your tweets.
The first rule of driving traffic anywhere is to keep your signal to noise ratio high. The signal we will define as useful content. We will call advertising or marketing material noise.
A good rule of thumb is to keep your marketing or selling pitches to a few a day, depending on how often you tweet daily. If you send out more than 100 tweets every day, you can easily get away with a couple that promotes a website or a product.
Where you send your visitors is up to you. But there are three current good places to drive traffic and a fourth that is emerging as a potential venue to bolster your brand. However, keep in mind the place you are directing people matters towards balancing your signal to noise ratio.
Sending followers to a store is very different than sending them to your own websites. When you are promoting content on your own site or channel, you earn advertising revenue, but you also maintain a solid signal to noise ratio.
For YouTube, the promotion of a new video is sharing good content and brand building, with the added bonus of ad revenue.
We’re going to start with the obvious one first. You can make money by driving people to a store.
It can be your store. In fact, I suggest you try that first. Especially if you are handy with crafts or other artistry. Take a picture of an item you are selling on your Etsy, eBay or Amazon store and tweet the picture out to your followers with a comment and a link to the storefront.
Authors can and should do the exact same thing. If you have built a reputation for interesting content, your followers will find this offer equally intriguing.
You can also tie the sale of the item to a particular cause that will further promote the sale. Telling your followers that you will donate fifty percent of the proceeds from the sale will go to a certain cause, and tweeting the message to that cause’s Twitter will get even more notice (and followers, too).
Affiliate Marketing via Twitter
A more common destination than your store is someone else’s. That’s called affiliate marketing. Amazon has tools that enable any tweeter to earn revenue by directing their followers to buy something on Amazon.
You accomplish this by sending out an infrequent tweet to your followers that reminds them that you are an Amazon affiliate and that if they make a purchase through your link, they are helping you out, at no cost to them.
I know some tweeters do this daily. I think doing it once or twice a week is better to prevent affiliate marketing fatigue.
If you have focused on highly specialized tweeting, geared to a particular industry or business type, you can find that services geared towards those industries will offer higher affiliate rates than a regular Amazon store.
Your value as a representative of their product is greater. Some niche publishers will give affiliates between 60 and 75% of the selling price of a blog for every customer they refer.
Even better because the blog is geared towards a niche you have already cultivated, your suggestion is not only valuable to you financially, it is an example of sharing relevant content to your followers. That keeps your signal to noise ration higher and ensures your feed does not feel spammy.
Google struck gold when they bought the video distribution website in 2006. The explosion of the site’s popularity has led to increased advertising revenues.
And in turn, as more ad revenue flows in, YouTube and Google have encouraged video producers to monetize their inpidual content and cash in themselves. That makes YouTube videos a prime source of revenue that a prolific and popular tweeter can earn.
Your YouTube channel functions as an extension of your brand. As you build up more credit with Twitter followers, you can more effectively direct them to watch your latest video.
The video becomes a longer version of the things you are saying on Twitter. But more importantly, because it is video, the follower feels more engaged. They’ll commonly watch the video and tweet at you or retweet it to their followers.
That leads to more views, a greater chance the video goes viral and more subscribers to your YouTube channel itself. Likewise, as you add subscribers, you also create a list you can market to. Some of your channel subscribers won’t be following you on Twitter, so you can promote your Twitter feed to them as well.
Your own site
Your site is your brand’s digital headquarters. Whether it’s a blog or a corporate site or even an online shopping portal, what you tweet and record are in furtherance of the brand identity you have created on this website. You can control how much advertising or affiliate marketing content is present on your website.
As I mentioned when I started tweeting I had been blogging. Twitter helped me promote my blog. I didn’t start out with a YouTube channel or a podcast, but I added both as they were means by which I could utilize AdSense and direct sponsorships to create even more revenue potentials.
Now I wasn’t just tweeting links to my blog, but also to every medium of content I was creating. Post a new story on the blog, tweet it out. Post a new video on YouTube, tweet it out.
Record a new podcast, tweet it out and have the interviewee tweet it out and share it through other social channels as well. And in each case, because it is relevant content, I’m keeping my signal to noise ratio very high.
A website is in many ways similar to YouTube. It is a means by which you increase your ad revenue through boosts in traffic. But a website can do far more than a YouTube channel can.
For starters, it can house your YouTube videos as well. It can provide additional affiliate marketing links. It can include information about your own products or services that people can buy from you.
How about a non-me example. I know an inpidual who runs a consulting business. This business takes questions from clients and prepares a detailed action plan to enable the client to accomplish the goal they set out. Twice a week, he’ll tweet out a link to the consulting business website.
To many of his followers, this is a friendly reminder that he can be retained as a strategic advisor for a business venture. But for a few people, that tweet is so well-timed that they contact my friend and engage him in a business relationship.
Just tweeting out that he’s a consultant is not going to make the sale. Tweeting a link to his consulting business’ website gives an interested prospective client the information they need to make a decision in their own best interests.
This is the emerging field of revenue generation via Twitter. Crowdfunding is not new. But using Twitter and social media to drive traffic to crowdfunding campaigns is a new and exciting means of ensuring a campaign’s success.
Whatever project you want to fund will need to have a connection to your existing brand. But provided it does, your followers will both fund your campaign and recruit other people to fund the campaign as well.
Just like with other site referrals crowdfunding appeals should avoid feeling spammy and should have some content that is delivered with them. You can also use successful follower building techniques such as event countdowns and promotions to build up your follower count in advance of and throughout the course of your funding drive.
These four are the best means of monetizing your Twitter account. But there is another way that may work if you have a ridiculously high follower count.

I’m going to stick with the idea of authenticity and point out the potential for conflicts of interest. As you sell sponsorships you create business relationships that may be contradictory to the messages you want to share. Let me give you an example.
Not long ago an outspoken celebrity was forced to resign from her position with a human rights organization due to a sponsorship relationship with a company whose very existence stirred up controversy.
As you become more entangled with business interests, your lack of knowledge of their connections may lead you to inadvertently lend credibility to a product or company whose parent company is opposed to your own ethical and moral values.
It is far better to maintain your own control over the message you tweet out. The websites that create these sponsorship relationships will advise you that you ultimately have control over the messages that are sent out. To an extent that is true. But once you accept their sponsorship, you effectively are stuck standing by that message indefinitely.
Maintaining total control over the messages you share prevents those kinds of conflicts of interest as well as the veneer of inauthenticity that drives away followers. Your tweets are what created your following. Your relatability to followers diminishes the more ruthlessly you market and sell to them.
This goes back to the notion of keeping your signal to noise ratio high. When you sell sponsorships, you are creating far more noise on your feed.
I still believe strongly that the idea of Twitter is one great big cloud-based hangout where people of like interests can hook up and converse, even if many thousands of miles separate them. The more ads we add to our conversation the less quality dialogue we will enjoy.
